Fancy Friday #4!

Image
Happy Fancy Friday! This week I wore one of my favorite dresses and added some 60's-inspired makeup and fun accessories, but the thing I'm proudest of is my hair! Say whaaat?! I saw  this tutorial  on Pinterest for curling your hair with a straightening iron and decided I had to try it. I think it's worth repeating that I am totally inept at doing my hair. Once upon a time I owned a curling iron and I can't recall ever successfully using it. But the flat iron technique worked great! Best thing about it is that if you get a funky curl you just flatten it out again! Check out the tutorial, you won't be disappointed.  The dress is an old one from Urban Outfitters that I got for $18 (originally $75). It's a bit of a policy of mine not to buy anything at UO unless it's on clearance.  Evoking the pinup vibe! That cute clutch is from Target and was a gift from my mom.  For my makeup, almost everything is from Sephora's line of cosmetics...

Fancy Friday #2

Happy Fancy Friday! This week I was inspired by this cute look and wanted to try the whole belt-over-cardigan look: We were going to a local production of "Reefer Madness" that night, so I thought a fun splash of purple would be nice.  I got the minidress and belt at a local thrift store for $4 a piece! I added my purple amethyst slab ring and some cloisonne and rope bracelets that also had touches of purple, and a mood ring on the other hand. The cardi is from Target.  Since we were going out in the evening, I did my eye shadow a bit darker that I usually do with shades of green and black, and I added some watermelon pink wet-look gloss to my lips. The necklace was a birthday gift from a friend. The purple tights are from Target - they always seem to have a great selection of fun colors. And the shoes were found at a discount shoe outlet for a song! (Haha that's my anklet I can't get off under the tights.) For my hair I did a simple mess...

Fancy Friday #1

Happy Fancy Friday everyone!  For my first post I decided to do what I know, something super simple so as not to psyche myself out of this idea. I really like wearing outfits like this, and I've done something similar before  here . I was inspired by some things I found on Pinterest like  this , and there's tons of other similar things on both my  Beautiful Fashion  and  Hipstery Goodness  boards. Skirt and shirt from Target, the tights are from H&M and have a fishbone weave you can't really see in the photo, but you can see them better in  this post.  Belt and shoes both from Urban Outfitters, and on clearance no less! I think the belt cost me all of $4.00. The necklace was made by a jewelry designer I know from the craft fair circuit, Jeannine of  Tangleweeds.  The bracelet is a vintage find. I'm a dunce when it comes to styling my hair. After bleaching it up so light for the  pink hair  and d...

Holy Pink Hair Batman!

Yup, I've done it again... Six hours of bleaching and dying at my wonderful sister's salon. It's washed up a bit from the initial color to a really lovely shade of pastel pink, which is what we were going for. I LOVE it. Johnny's warming up to it haha. It's going to be a lot of upkeep but I think it's going to stay for a while. Anyone have any really good recipes for home made conditioner? I'm going through the stuff like crazy!

Pin Curls.

I have to admit, lately I've been feeling a little down. Just kind of a general blah, which is unusual for me, especially in summer. I've just been sitting around too much I think, getting chubbier, so I really need to exercise more. It's amazing how much more exercise I got working a regular 9-5 retail job; I was on my feet all day. Since I made the transition to working for myself and freelancing at other creative companies I sit around all day making things now... So to get myself out of the dumps and feel special, I decided to go all out and do my hair and makeup big-time, all on my own. For those of you who know me this is no small feat. I went to the 15th anniversary show of Thrillville at our local tiki lounge, and I decided that would be the day. I did my hair up in pin curls while it was still damp, then gently blow-dried it to set them. I've never done them before, but I was sure I could do them since they're so simple, inspired by this video from ...

A Day in the Life...

Image
This post was supposed to be written quite a while ago when the whole "Occupy Oakland" thing was still going on, but as I have siad I was going through a transitional phase and didn't get time to post it. I just had a really cool day and finally remembered to bring my camera along for the ride, and I got some neat pictures! You ever have one of those days when everything just kinda feels right and works out? This day was one of those days. It was a Saturday and I got up nice and early, did my usual morning routine except for the fact that my hair turned out unusually nice for a change. Must have been because it was dry and warm out (my hair goes all poofy when it's wet outside), and it probably helped that I was relatively awake when I did it. I was feeling pretty good so I decided to try my hand at putting on some makeup, including eyeliner, which usually makes me look like a retarded raccoon. But today was a good day! So I took pictures to document the fa...

It's all about the results.

Recently I've gone through quite a few changes job-wise and I realized the other day that I haven't even shared what's been going on with me, and what has been causing some of my absence on here. Where should I start... Well, I finally couldn't hack my commute out to the toy store in San Francisco anymore, and Dennis and I wanted to go to Portland for Christmas this year, which my boss would never have let me do. So the winds of change came blowing my way and I gave my notice after I got a part-time gig at a scrapbooking store in Berkeley and a couple ongoing freelance gigs. This was at the end of September, and all was well until a couple months later when I was spectacularly laid off from my really fun position at the scrapbooking store. But the funny thing is, I wasn't really all that broken up about it. Granted, I honestly enjoyed the job and it was a source of endless inspiration; I learned a lot of new techniques and had fun starting to make a scrapbook. But...

Happy New Year!

Image
... And we're back on track! We got back from Portland the day before New Year's Eve and my sister came into town about an hour behind us so I got to spend the New Year with her! We went to a party thrown by my friends Vanessa and Glen. Good times: a balloon drop, party poppers, good food and champagne, and pretty people! But sissy made it extra special for me by doing my hair and makeup. For anyone who knows me this is a big deal! Fake eyelashes even, which took some getting used to but were really fun, and I felt very pretty. It was a great start to what is sure to be a very interesting year, but more on that later. Cheers everyone!
