My Favorite Fabric

Today has been a very wonderful day. I feel like I got a lot done. I've finally made a book I want to sell on etsy, I'm going to list it tomorrow. I stopped off at the craft store for some more cover paper and was struck by these felts they have. I especially like the one that looks like alligator skin. I bought a couple sheets of each, and I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them. Maybe purses? It would be a simple construction, just fold them in half and stitch, maybe line it with a piece of red felt, add a snap closure and voila, a clutch. I'll have to give that a try, maybe give some instructions in a later post?
There's just something about felt that makes me happy. I guess because it's so inexpensive (the craft felt that is), and it's perfect for hand sewing because it doesn't fray. I guess thats why there are so many adorable little plushies, patches, pins, etc. made by people on etsy. I'd love to give it a try, I just want to add some of my own style to it.

  1. Truly you should try the 100% wool felt from achildsdream.com (the stuff I use). I promise you will never want to use that craft store felt again.

  2. Isn't that stuff a little expensive though? One of the things I love about craft felt is you can buy two sheets and make a stuffed animal for fourty cents. I'll definately check out that website, I've been wondering where to get real felt from. Thanks!

  3. I've been reading over your latest posts, and I LOVE the clutch you made! It hardly looks like felt. And the elephants - I'm a sucker for them.

The felt at A Child's Dream IS more expensive. I purchased a sample pack - all 50-some of their colors (9x9)for $120-something dollars. Per sheet, it works out to about $2.30. But it's softer and more substantial. The craft stuff is fine for general crafts, but I make a lot of appliques with mine - stuff that has to hold up to numerous washings. My felt is off limits to my Hannah (7), but I buy her craft felt all the time. I love the funky prints too, and you can't find that at A Child's Dream.

  4. Hehe, I'm glad you like it. I can't wait to finish some of them and put them in my shop, but I still don't know what kind of embellishments to put on them. Oh, and I forgot to say that Gertrude is made from super soft fleece, not felt. I'm a scatterbrain sometimes, lol!
I checked out that site and it has such cool stuff, and that felt is more affordable than I intitially thought. But I've also been really interested in making feted things from scratch using wool roving. But I have too many things on my list to try that right now.
I'm going to start some scarves with felt appliques and I've got that huge pile of teddy bears. It
s nice when the materials cost me 20 cents, because then I can take my time hand sewing and adding cute details and still make enough money.
And you have to love the patterns -and those weird pressed ones really hold up well and lamost look and feel like leather. Thanks for stooping by and saying hello, it's nice to know there's someone out there who reads this thing!
